The Modern Gallery of the Saarland Museum is one of the outstanding museum buildings of the early Federal Republic. It was designed by the St. Ingbert-based architect Hanns Schönecker and realised in three construction phases between 1965 and 1976. Today, it is ranked as a listed building because of its high architectural and historical value. The extension of the Gallery goes back to the ideas of the founding director of the museum, Rudolf Bornschein. It results both from the requirements of a constantly growing collection and from a changing artistic practice, requiring forms of presentation which cannot be provided by the existing building.
