Uhlmann Assembly Hall

As part of a major extension and new building project, a new goods receiving dock, two-storey assembly halls, new shipping facilities and a modern customer centre are added to the headquarters of the machine building company Uhlmann in Laupheim.

The design aims at combining efficient production areas with comfortable office workplaces in a single unit. Good lighting and optimised processes in the halls as well as a strong link with the outside world and short distances in the office area all help to create ideal working conditions. This means that the headquarters are upgraded substantially – the company’s open-mindedness and customer orientation are given structural expression.

The design is dominated by the meandering shape of the production hall on the ground floor. A flat roof with a cantilevered canopy marks the new main entrance and provides a link between the old and the new building. The meander integrates the existing building and also encompasses the open spaces on the roof of the hall. This creates a varied mix of indoor and outdoor spaces with direct, interesting views – it facilitates orientation and a permanent view of the greenery outside. The meandering roof gardens are an integral part of the office space, so they also serve as recreational zones or informal work areas.
