  • An evening dedicated to the art and culture of building

The award ceremony “Beispielhaftes Bauen Landkreis Ludwigsburg” impressively demonstrated the diversity and responsibility with which construction is carried out in the county. It was inspiring to see the commitment with which local authorities, planners, and building contractors are working to make high-quality architecture possible, even under challenging conditions.

The award-winning projects prove that a clear stance, careful planning, and joint action make a noticeable difference - in the cityscape, in the towns, and above all in people's everyday lives. We are therefore all the more delighted that two projects in which we were involved have received awards:

🏆 Community hall in Kirchheim am Neckar
    Design: asp Architekten GmbH, Stuttgart
Client: Municipality of Kirchheim am Neckar
Services Wenzel + Wenzel: Project supervision

    🏆 Student residence Ludwigsburg
Design: Reichel Schlaier Architekten GmbH, Stuttgart
    Client: Studierendenwerk Stuttgart AöR, Stuttgart
Services Wenzel + Wenzel: Preparation of the contract award / Participation in the contract award / Project supervision / Project management

A big thank you to the Architektenkammer Baden Württemberg (AKBW) for the award and for the inspiring setting in which the importance of good building culture is so impressively visible.

  • Heidelberg City Hall reopens with a bang

On February 1, 2026, Heidelberg City Hall reopened its doors after six years of intensive renovation - and the city celebrated this moment with palpable joy and great pride. Early in the day, people flocked to the banks of the Neckar River, and around 2,400 visitors were able to experience the traditional concert hall in its new splendor. The atmosphere was solemn, festive, and expectant - a day on which Heidelberg noticeably “got its heart back,” as Mayor Prof. Dr. Eckart Würzner said.

The design by Waechter + Waechter Architekten BDA | Darmstadt brings the building closer to its original Art Nouveau character. At the same time, the entire building services have been modernized, the infrastructure redesigned, and accessibility fundamentally improved.

The Wolfgang Marguerre Hall, formerly known as the Great Hall, is one of the most impressive examples of this: flexible lifting floors now allow for both level and ascending seating, creating optimal sightlines and excellent acoustics. Visitors quickly noticed how clear and warm the room now sounds, especially when the Heidelberg Philharmonic Orchestra opened the festivities with music.

The colonnade leading to the Neckar has also regained its special role. Open, glazed, and flooded with light, it has become a place where people enjoy lingering - with a view of the river, the "Philosophenweg" and the hustle and bustle on the riverbank. New elevators create connections that were not possible before and now make the city hall equally accessible to everyone.

We were responsible for service phases 6–8 of this special project and are delighted with the successful opening! Thank you to everyone involved for their successful cooperation.

  • Construction decision for "Haus für Film und Medien Stuttgart"

A major boost for Stuttgart: the decision to build the Stuttgart "Haus für Film und Medien" has been made! On January 29, 2026, the city council officially approved the construction of the Stuttgart Moving Image Center (SMIC). Building work will begin in March 2026.

The architectural design is by DMAA | Delugan Meissl Associated Architects in collaboration with Wenzel + Wenzel. We are also responsible for cost and schedule planning as well as LPH 5-8. The building is designed as an open, transparent house of learning, experience, and experimentation – with cinemas, studios, laboratories, workshop-based learning spaces, and public areas.

We are very excited to take this visionary project into the next phase and create a place that takes film and media culture to a new level. Let's get started – we're ready!

  • New on our website: Inclusive Design

For us, Inclusive Design means designing architecture in such a way that it can be used by everyone from the outset – regardless of age, individual abilities, or physical conditions. It is not about retroactively correcting barriers. It is about creating spaces that guide people, give them security, and enable independence. Spaces in which everyone can move around naturally – right from the start.

By adding the service Inclusive Design we are highlighting something that has long been part of our work: the awareness that genuine participation can only happen if it is considered and planned from the outset.

In addition, our colleagues Jasmin (Berlin office) and Kübra (Frankfurt office) are listed in the bfb (barrier-free building) expert database. This listing confirms our professional qualifications in barrier-free construction, strengthens our visibility for builders and planners, and underscores our role as a reliable point of contact for inclusive, sustainable solutions.

  • Two awards at the Saarland State Prize „Orte der Arbeit“ 2025

On November 18, 2025, two of our projects were honored at the Saarland State Prize “Places of Work” award ceremony:

The Polizeiinspektion Saarbrücken, designed by arus GmbH | Willi Latz | Architektur und Stadtplanung, was honored as a prize winner. This project demonstrates how modern architecture can rethink working environments: functional, secure, and at the same time open to the people who work there every day.

The Innovation Center Saarbrücken (ICS), designed by RKW Architektur + Rhode Kellermann Wawrowsky GmbH, also received recognition. The ICS stands for flexibility and sustainability – a place that reflects social and professional change and creates space for creativity and collaboration.

The state prize honors projects that view workplaces not only as functional spaces, but as places that inspire people and offer them safety and comfort. The jury placed particular emphasis on criteria such as design quality, sustainability, cost-effectiveness, accessibility, and the ability to adapt to changing requirements. Sociocultural aspects and the quality of the planning processes also play a central role.

We are proud to have contributed to this vision with both projects. Congratulations to everyone involved for this outstanding achievement!

Further information about the award winners can be found on the official website of the State Prize.

  • Clear the stage for the renovated Kleines Haus of the Staatstheater Darmstadt

The Staatstheater Darmstadt reopened its Kleines Haus with a festive opening weekend – a central venue for theater, dance, and cultural encounters now shines in new splendor. Following extensive renovation, the theater is now state-of-the-art in terms of technology, energy efficiency, and design.

Particularly noteworthy are the modern stage technology, improved acoustics, new lighting and sound systems, and significantly increased accessibility. Artistic director Karsten Wiegand sums it up: “You can hear and see everything perfectly from every seat.”

The impressive figures for the project speak for themselves: 3,450 m³ of reinforced concrete, 60 tons of machinery, 57 km of electrical cable – and a strong team behind the implementation.

Hessens Minister of Finance Lorz summed it up aptly: “What had the makings of a drama in between is now getting a happy ending after all.” We congratulate the entire project team and wish them every success with the final remaining work until the final acceptance on November 30.

  • Starting signal for demolition work at the Gutenberg Museum, Mainz

Another important step has been taken in the major project to rebuild and modernize the Gutenberg Museum: Lord Mayor Nino Haase, Interior Minister Michael Ebling, Head of Building and Culture Marianne Grosse and Museum Director Ulf Sölter announced last week that the state of Rhineland-Palatinate has confirmed that the new building of the city's most visited museum is a viable option. According to Haase, this is an important step in the application for state funding.

The construction work on Liebfrauenplatz will then begin shortly. Work will begin with the removal of pollutants. The next step will be to demolish the old parts of the building. New construction will then start at the beginning of 2026. In order to make Liebfrauenplatz more welcoming during the construction work, those responsible from the city of Mainz, the state and the museum also presented the newly designed and informative construction fence.

  • 2nd Prize in the competition for the renovation and expansion of Rybnik Stadium!

Congratulations to our team in Wrocław! 🎉
The jury especially praised the harmonious integration of the design into the urban context. Our concept creates a vibrant, open space around the stadium that is accessible not only on match days but also in everyday life for local residents.
The façade design references the history of the city of Rybnik, where fishing played a significant role in the Middle Ages. The delicate elements are reminiscent of fish scales in their form, creating a link between the past and the present.
    👏 Congratulations to everyone involved!

  • We celebrate International Women's Day and women in architecture

On March 8 is International Women's Day, which is celebrated in 26 countries and in Berlin. We took this as an opportunity to ask our female colleagues why they decided to become architects or civil engineers, what they particularly liked about it, and whether there was a female role model. Each of these women has her own story, her own challenges, and her own unique perspective that has shaped her as a woman in architecture.

At Wenzel + Wenzel, we are pioneers in a field where women are still underrepresented, with a 55 % female workforce. We are particularly proud of the fact that 39 % of our managers are women - a figure that continues to rise. But this is just the beginning! We believe there is still a lot of potential, and it is time to encourage more women to pursue their professional dreams in architecture and engineering.

You can find the full interviews on our LinkedIn profile. And here's our Instagram post to Women's Day!

  • Architecture students at Wenzel + Wenzel

Last Friday, we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of master's students from the University of Stuttgart to our Stuttgart office. The students are enrolled in the Master’s program in Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning and are part of the Institute for Construction Economics. The visit was led by Dipl.-Ing. Christopher Hagmann, the academic advisor at the University of Stuttgart, and served as an excellent example of the close connection between academic education and practical architectural work. The students had the opportunity to engage directly with our colleague Silke and our colleagues Adis and Michael, participating in an in-depth Q&A session where they could ask questions and gain valuable firsthand insights.

A key focus of the discussion was the topic of tendering—an essential area for architectural firms, often associated with numerous legal and organizational requirements. The students learned about the practical challenges involved in the tendering process for construction projects and the strategic considerations that come into play. From the preparation and evaluation of bills of quantities to the selection of suitable contractors, they received insights into the tendering process. In addition, real-world examples from ongoing and past projects were presented to give the students a tangible understanding of the specific procedures and challenges involved.

We take great pride in supporting and fostering the next generation of architects on their professional journey and see this exchange as an important step in promoting dialogue between theory and practice. We remain available as a point of contact for the students of the University of Stuttgart and look forward to further strengthening the connection between academia and professional practice.

  • Happy Birthday, Porsche Museum!

The Porsche Museum in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen is celebrating its 16th anniversary today, 31 January 2025. Since its opening in 2009, it has become one of the most visited museums in Stuttgart, attracting car enthusiasts from around the world every year.

However, it’s not just the vehicles that make the museum a must-visit—the architecture is equally impressive. Designed by the Viennese architecture firm Delugan Meissl Associated Architects, the building resembles a monolith that appears to float above the ground, earning it the nickname Flieger.

Wenzel + Wenzel was responsible for execution planning, as well as aspects of contract preparation, award participation, and site supervision.

Happy 16th anniversary to the Porsche Museum! Congratulations to the former team and everyone involved in bringing this extraordinary building to life.

  • Gutenberg-Museum Mainz: Marking the beginning of the deconstruction.

With a ceremonial gesture, the symbolic key to the Schell Building was given back to the Mainz Building Authority (GWM) on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. On behalf of the Gutenberg Museum, the City of Mainz’s Commissioner for Construction and Culture, Marianne Grosse, together with Museum Director Dr. Ulf Sölter and Old Town District Mayor Dr. Brian Huck, presented the key to GWM. It was accepted by Project Manager Marina Bouché, who will oversee the construction of the new World Museum of Printing Arts.

This handover officially marks the beginning of the deconstruction of the old museum building to make way for the new construction. The next visible step will take place on March 10t: the construction site will be secured with a fence. Following this, the building will be gutted before the actual demolition begins. Afterward, the basement will be excavated, and the city and state heritage conservation authorities will examine the excavation site for archaeological finds. Once these investigations are complete, work on the new building is set to begin.

  • K1c in the Concular-Shop

The revitalisation of the Schlossgarten quarter in Stuttgart's city centre includes the conversion of the former Karstadt building at Königstrasse 1c. The former department store will be replaced by innovative office and retail space with an open catering area facing the Schlossgarten. Sustainability, energy efficiency and climate protection play a major role in this building: the roof areas will be greened, not only with mosses and low grasses, but also designed as gardens. Where possible, external walls are also given a ‘green dress’ to help improve the urban climate.

The renovation prioritises the preservation of the building fabric, compliance with environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria and climate and resource protection. We are working with Concular, Germany's largest shop for circular building materials, to conserve resources during the demolition of the current building stock and to provide them with new values in line with the circular economy. Individual components of the K1C are for sale via the Concular Shop, which can find a buyer before the actual dismantling.

The materials come primarily from the commercial building stock. In addition to railings and shop windows, mullion and transom constructions and escalators can also be purchased, for example. You can buy everything here: shop.concular.de (external)

The planned realisation on site will start in November. We wish everyone involved every success!

    HUGO-HÄRING-LANDESPREIS 2024
Awarded by the Association of German Architects BDA Baden-Württemberg
The award procedure has two stages. In the first stage, the Hugo Häring awards are presented. The light rail tunnel has now also reached the second stage: the Hugo Häring State Prize. From the jury's statement: "Underground stations are generally spaces that can be described as non-places. They do not have an unusual and identity-forming character. The light rail tunnel designed by allmannwappner with its holistic approach to station architecture fundamentally changes this rule." More information

  • Universelle Ulm in Science Park III

The sky is the limit - during the construction of Universelle Ulm in Science Park III, designed by architects Mühlich + Partner. Our colleague Vincent used a drone to capture impressions of the entire building complex with all three towers as well as brilliant detail shots. We published the film and photos on Instagram and LinkedIn.

Science Park III and Universelle Ulm are part of the ‘Science City Ulm’. The idea behind this is to create an attractive environment for students and to offer optimal working and research conditions for business and research. According to the city of Ulm, around 11,500 people work in the Science City, including the clinics, and over 14,000 students are enrolled at the universities. The three towers of the Universelle Ulm are intended to create additional space for companies to settle in, and the rooms are flexibly adaptable for start-ups through to globally active companies.

Many thanks for the great cooperation to all those involved in the construction!
